How To Overcome A Grasshopper Mentality

Numbers 13: 32-33,

And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.

And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

This story is about the children of Israel going to the land that God had promised them, but it's also about you and I. They were now freed slaves, but being a slave is all they had ever known. For four hundred years they had been groomed in inferiority, living daily under the authority, power, control, and superiority of the Egyptians. They had spent their lives working for food, clothing, and shelter, having no means or power to rise above their dire circumstances, until they were delivered by God.

Now they were in the wilderness, being carried by God to a place of their own. They knew of the Egyptian gods, but they had only passed down, hear-say knowledge of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. So they were reluctant to totally trust and depend on him for their welfare and support, and to overcome the enemies along the way.

So to increase their faith, and make them know that all he told them was true, God instructed Moses to send twelve men, one leader from each tribe, over to spy out the land, to see that it was a good land, a rich and fertile land, a land flowing with milk and honey.

The spies spent forty days in the land of Canaan, observing all the land entailed. The great walled cities, the fertile plains and valleys, and the abundant growth of the fruit of the vine. The men even brought back one cluster of grapes so large they had to place it on a stick, and carry it on the shoulders of two men.

But when they came before the congregation to give their report, all they seemed to remember was the giants in the land, and how small, weak, and inferior they felt. They no longer reflected on all the wonders and slpendor they had seen, only the giants.

Many of us have lived some portion of our lives in inferiority, thinking ourselves less, seeing ourselves smaller, even believing ourselves to be insignificant. Many of us have experienced the "Grasshopper Mentality." Many of us see ourselves as grasshoppers, and

believe everyone else sees us the same way.

Now is the time for us, as children of God, to overcome the "Grasshopper Mentality." And we do it by trusting God in all things. Trust God's word, trust God's will, and trust God's way. It is time we trust that God is able, and his arm is not too short to save. We must trust that there is nothing too hard for our God, and that God can do what we see as impossible. God never fails, there is no enemy, adversary, or foe that God cannot bring down, bring into subjection, or place under our feet.

It is time for us to stand on the scriptures we quote, with our knees buckled, our feet planted firmly in his word, and his promises concerning us.

Speak to your situation and say, "What God Has For Me, It Is For Me."
